VRTX
Is Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) a good Buffett stock?
Based on the Buffett-Fit framework, Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) currently scores 64/100 and a partial fit against Warren Buffett's documented criteria. The five pillars (economic moat, earnings durability, management quality, financial health, valuation) drive the composite. The full reasoning behind every pillar is below. Educational only, not investment advice.
Five pillars at a glance. Vertex Pharmaceuticals's Buffett-Fit score weighs ROIC sustainability (currently 0.2%), gross-margin durability (0.9%), net-debt-to-EBITDA (-0.68x), free-cash-flow conversion (0.81x net income), and the owner-earnings yield (2.8%). Each pillar is scored 0-100 against sector-relative benchmarks.
Where VRTX passes the test. A Buffett-style holding needs durable returns, conservative debt, owner-friendly management, and a price below intrinsic value. The full pillar breakdown on /buffett/vrtx/ shows where Vertex Pharmaceuticals clears each bar, and where it doesn't. The current composite score (64/100) reflects the weighted average across all five pillars.
What the score does NOT say. A high Buffett-Fit score is a pattern-match against documented criteria, not a forecast. A stock scoring 90 today can underperform if its underlying business deteriorates faster than the score updates. A stock scoring 30 can outperform if the business recovers. The score weighs current fundamentals against a documented framework: that's all it claims to do.
How invest-like measures this
The Buffett-Fit framework on invest-like scores any public stock from 0 to 100 across five weighted pillars: economic moat (durable competitive advantage), earnings durability (consistent profitability), management quality (capital allocation), financial health (conservative balance sheet), and valuation (margin of safety).
Each pillar is scored on the same 0-100 sub-scale using the rubric Warren Buffett has documented across 50+ years of Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters. The overall score is the weighted average.
