Benjamin Graham

Misconception: Graham only bought ugly, beaten-down stocks.

Correction. He bought according to two distinct framework tracks. The enterprising-investor cohort featured net-nets and balance-sheet bargains, which often were ugly. The defensive-investor cohort emphasised seasoned dividend-paying common stocks of large, financially strong companies, which were typically not ugly at all. The 1949 Intelligent Investor presents both tracks as parallel paths, not stages of the same approach.

Misconception: Net-net investing is dead.

Correction. The supply of net-nets has shrunk dramatically in developed-market large-cap universes since the 1980s, but academic research through the 2000s and 2010s (including Henry Oppenheimer's 1986 study and subsequent international replications) consistently finds positive abnormal returns in the surviving cohort. The strategy has migrated to Japanese small-caps, Korean industrials, and frontier-market issues where the original conditions still obtain.

Misconception: Graham was opposed to growth investing.

Correction. He distinguished between growth in the sense of paying a high multiple for projected future earnings (which he treated as speculative) and growth that emerged from the natural compounding of a financially strong business held over time. The Chapter 14 defensive criteria specifically require ten-year earnings growth of at least one-third per share, so growth was part of the framework; it was the willingness to pay a premium for it that he resisted.

Misconception: The Intelligent Investor is outdated.

Correction. The specific numeric thresholds (sales of 100 million dollars, P/E under 15) are 1949 to 1973 vintage and need inflation adjustment for modern markets. The analytical principles (Mr Market, margin of safety, investor versus speculator, the defensive versus enterprising tracks) are time-invariant and are reaffirmed in essentially every Berkshire shareholder letter Buffett has written for fifty years.

Misconception: Graham invented value investing.

Correction. He codified and named it. Earlier investors including John Burr Williams (whose 1938 Theory of Investment Value formalised dividend discounting) and pre-1929 practitioners like Edgar Lawrence Smith had developed strands of the value approach. Graham's contribution was the systematic, teachable framework combining fundamental analysis, margin of safety, and behavioural discipline into a single integrated discipline.

Misconception: Graham was rich because he ran a hedge fund.

Correction. Graham-Newman compounded at roughly 14.7 percent annually before fees over its life, materially above the market but not the multi-decade 20-percent figures associated with Buffett or Greenblatt. Graham's outsized impact comes from his teaching at Columbia from 1928 to 1956 and from his books, not from a Buffett-scale personal fortune.

What is Benjamin Graham known for?

Graham is known as the father of value investing. He developed the discipline of security analysis (estimating a stock's intrinsic value from its financial statements and demanding a margin of safety between price and value), wrote the two foundational books Security Analysis (1934) and The Intelligent Investor (1949), and taught at Columbia Business School where Warren Buffett was his most famous student.

What is the difference between Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett?

Graham was the deep-value purist. He bought statistically cheap businesses regardless of qualitative quality, ran a diversified basket, and measured intrinsic value defensively on the balance sheet. Buffett, especially after Charlie Munger's influence in the 1960s, shifted to buying high-quality businesses with durable moats at fair prices rather than statistically cheap mediocre ones. Buffett describes himself as 85 percent Graham and 15 percent Fisher.

What is the Graham Number?

The Graham Number is a defensive fair-value estimate equal to the square root of 22.5 times earnings per share times book value per share. The 22.5 comes from Graham's twin caps of 15 times trailing earnings and 1.5 times tangible book value, multiplied. invest-like calculates the Graham Number on every stock page automatically.

What is net-net investing?

A net-net is a stock trading below two-thirds of its net current asset value (current assets minus all liabilities, ignoring fixed assets entirely). The thesis is that even in liquidation, the working capital alone covers the purchase price, treating any going-concern value as a free option. Graham ran the strategy systematically at Graham-Newman from 1936 to 1956.

Why did Buffett study under Graham?

Buffett read The Intelligent Investor in 1949 at age nineteen and described it as the single book that most influenced his career. After being rejected by Harvard Business School, he enrolled at Columbia specifically to study under Graham, who was then teaching the Security Analysis course. Buffett received the only A+ Graham awarded in twenty-two years of teaching.

What is Mr Market?

Mr Market is Graham's allegorical character introduced in Chapter 8 of The Intelligent Investor. Imagine a partner in your private business who, every day, offers either to buy your share or sell you his at an emotionally driven price. The investor's discipline is to ignore Mr Market unless his price is so foolish (very high or very low) that transacting becomes worthwhile. The lesson is that the market exists to serve, not to instruct.

How does invest-like score the Graham framework?

invest-like applies a five-pillar Graham-Fit Score to every public stock: balance-sheet strength, earnings stability, dividend continuity, valuation discipline (price relative to the Graham Number and net working capital), and size threshold. Stocks are scored from 0 to 100 with the reasoning written out per pillar. The live cohort is at /fit/graham/ and the methodology hub is at /methodology/.

Did Benjamin Graham believe in market timing?

He explicitly rejected forecasting as a method, calling it impossible for the general public to do profitably. He did, however, advocate a quasi-mechanical defensive allocation rule (the 50-50 stock and bond split with adjustment based on market valuation levels) which is closer to rebalancing than timing, and he advocated taking advantage of Mr Market's mood swings when they offered enough margin of safety to be worth acting on.

When did Benjamin Graham die?

Graham died on 21 September 1976 in Aix-en-Provence, France, aged 82. He had retired from Graham-Newman in 1956, continued teaching at UCLA, and spent his later years writing and travelling. The fourth edition of The Intelligent Investor (1973) was his last full revision.
